The goal of training is to impart the information employees need to improve job performance and productivity in their roles. While learners were engaged during the session, how much of the information will they retain and be able to put into action in their daily jobs? A challenge all training professionals face is that is once a training event is over, the amount of information retained will decline over time. This has been documented in the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve.

When you take a flight, do you watch the airplane safety video? Be honest.
Many inflight safety videos are good examples of what NOT to do in corporate training videos. They are often boring and if you look around the plane, pretty much no one pays attention to them.
Several years ago, Virgin America tried to address this issue by producing an animated safety video featuring wacky characters. The voice over was delivered in a mildly sarcastic tone, as if to say, “Yeah, we know you’ve seen this a hundred times but we still have to show it so at least we can try to make you smile”.

It has been widely reported that a work culture supporting employee engagement leads to greater employee retention. The Gallup survey “State of the American Workplace” found that only one-third of employees are “engaged” at work – they love their jobs and work hard every day to improve their organizations. That means two-thirds of employees are not engaged – 51% are “just there” and 16% are “actively disengaged”, miserable in their jobs and destroying much of the good work done by engaged employees.1
