With the increasing presence of virtual and global contract training teams, resorting to the traditional form of in-person interviewing is obsolete and no longer relevant. The current global way of conducting business has demanded an unprecedented level of remote interviewing, specifically in the contract trainer world.
TECHNICAL WRITER - You have spent the last 5 months creating a product that perfectly speaks to a market that you have carefully crafted. You now realize a need for a well-written and understood manual outlining the functionality and instructions of this new product, but you are debating between having it written by your in-house developer or an external contract technical writer. You may be quick to assume this talent can be easily found within your workplace. The truth , however, is that writing technical materials, including installation guides, operator manuals and procedure manuals, require a specialized set of skills. It is a difficult form of writing and often requires someone with varying backgrounds, experience, knowledge and ability. The challenge lies in the ability of the writer to explain the facts about technology and science in the most simplistic and understandable manner.

Like it or not, negotiation is a fact of life. Without even knowing it, you negotiate something every day. A discussion on the price you are willing to pay for a house with a stranger or a curfew time with your daughter. Perhaps you will find yourself negotiating with your partner about what to buy, where to eat, what television station to watch or who gets the remote! At work, you’re faced with discussions about a raise with your boss or the perfect time for a meeting with your colleagues.
As instructional designers, we’re always looking for new concepts that will lead to successful
learning experiences. A main psychological phenomenon heavily practiced in the world of instructional design is information chunking. Chunking content is critical because of the way the human brain works.

Previously, in our Course Development Tips – How to Build a Good Design Plan post, we wrote about the importance of having a good design plan in place before jumping into development to ensure the success of a corporate training program. For an eLearning course, instructional design services should also include creating a visual storyboard as part of that plan. A great storyboard will save time, money and avoid clients being surprised or disappointed by the end results. A visual storyboard is, in essence, a bridge between what is envisioned and what will be.
