TrainingFolks Healthcare Performance ImprovementInsight : With changes to HIPAA encompassing HIPAA 5010 and ICD-10 there is a requirement that healthcare providers are in compliance.  The regulation change includes:

  • Providers/physicians, including alternate site providers
  • Payers
  • Health care clearinghouses
  • Pharmacies
  • Health plans

ICD-10 is an abbreviation for "International Classification of Diseases:, Tenth Revision. It can be used to refer to Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM)  or  Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS).

As of October 1, 2013 implementation of ICD-10-CM (diagnoses) and ICD-10-PCS (procedures) must be in place in order to be comliant.

In addition, ICD-10 deadlines include –

  • Ambulatory and physician services provided on or after October 1, 2013 will use ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes
  • Inpatient discharges occurring on or after October 1, 2013 will use ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes
  • Services provided on or after October 1, 2013, ICD-9-CM codes will not be accepted
  • Prior to October 1, 2013, ICD-10 codes will not be accepted for services

With such a critical change taking place, it's important to be sure that the medical staff is trained and prepared for the change.
