4 Tips to Keep in Mind While Creating Virtual Instructor-Led Training (vILT)
When it comes to learning, people prefer different methods. Some like to be physically present, and learn in a classroom setting, while others prefer the convenience and interactivity of online learning. Though both are great methods of training, do you know how to convert your existing iLT to vILT?
Converting your classroom training to virtual isn’t as simple as taking your existing training material and presenting it online. To get the most from virtual instructor-led training, you want to design a training program that takes advantage of this format.
Here are a few tips to bear in mind:
1. Share your screen
When you are conducting vILT, it is important to share your screen with the participants. This might sound obvious, but it's surprising to see how many don’t do this, instead of sending training material ahead of time for students to review. This allows your learners to see your slides and any other materials that you are using and ensures high engagement. It also allows them to follow along with you as you go through the lesson.
If you are using a virtual whiteboard, make sure that everyone can see it. It’s a good idea to make learners aware of the chat function, and have your virtual producer respond. This means learners can get clarification or ask questions in real-time, without disrupting your other learners.
When sharing your screen, it is important to use a virtual platform that is reliable and easy to use. There are many different options available, so do some research to find the one that best suits your needs.
2. Engage your participants
Just like in a traditional classroom setting, it is important to engage your participants in virtual instructor led training. This can be done by asking questions, inviting them to share their thoughts and ideas, and using group activities.
It is also important to keep the lesson interactive. You can do this by incorporating multimedia elements such as videos, audio clips, and games. This will help to keep the participants engaged and focused on the lesson.
Don’t forget to also provide opportunities for practice. This can be done through exercises, quizzes, and simulations. By providing a chance to apply what they have learned, you will help them to better retain the information.
3. Make it fun
Learning can and should be fun! If it isn’t, you’re probably doing something wrong. When you are creating vILT, try to make it an enjoyable experience for the participants.
One way to do this is to make the training interactive. Design elements of the course that have participants taking active participation and doing activities to support the learning objectives. Just be careful not to overdo it.
Another way to make it fun is to use gamification. This means incorporating game-like elements into the lesson. For example, you could give participants points for answering questions correctly or for completing exercises. You could also use leader boards to add a competitive element.
4. Provide feedback
It is important to provide feedback during your virtual instructor led training. Consider the use of polls and surveys and ask participants to provide feedback at the end of the lesson.
This feedback will help you to improve for future sessions. It will also give you an idea of what your learners thought of the lesson. Did they find it helpful? Was it too long or too short? What could be improved?
